8 policemen arrested in connection with teenager shot during Anambra festival

The DPO in charge of Ogidi Police Division in Anambra state in person of Mr. Mark Ijarafu ordered the arrest and detention of eight mobile policemen who were involved in a shooting during the Mgbe-Agbogho festival of Ogidi over the weekend.

It resulted in a 17 year old boy, Arinze Obigbo being hospitalized after he was allegedly shot in the abdomen. The mobile policemen were serving at Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.

The President-General of Ogidi town union disclosed to newsmen that the eight policemen said to have been posted to Ugwunwasike roundabout, are being held at the Ogidi Divisional Police Station after one of them shot the boy and they were all arrested by police authorities in the Division.

Chief Chuka- Jideofor Onubogu added that the DPO in charge of the division played a fatherly role by taking immediate action and ordering for the detainment of the policemen involved.

Vanguard reports:

“There is no justifiable reason to shoot a boy of that age, while they were celebrating the Mgbe-Agbogho festival to herald the arrival of the popular Nwafor Ogidi festival.

The eight policemen did not manage the situation well when the youths with their masquerades were in the roundabout celebrating and displaying youthful exuberance.

I was informed that the Police started firing into the air to scare them and as they were running helter-skelter, Obigbo was being pursued by one of the policemen and he fell. The policeman shot him in the abdomen but on sensing danger, all the policemen ran away.

When the DPO got the information, he quickly took the boy to Mayor Hospital and from where he was transferred to Multicare Hospital. However, the boy is responding to treatment when he went to see him at the hospital.”
