Some United’s fans will be happy, while some will be sad.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been released by Manchester United.
The Swedish striker suffered a cruciate ligament injury in United’s Europa League quarter-final win over Anderlecht in April and missed the final 10 matches of the season.
United had the option to extend the 35-year-old’s contract by an extra year, although the knee injury, which forced him to miss the Europa League final win over former club Ajax, has ultimately made up the club’s mind, Goal reported.
Despite having undergone successful surgery, it is expected to take moths before Ibrahimovic will be in a position to return to action.
Mourinho has subsequently decided against waiting for the veteran attacker to recover, with the club looking for a replacement in the summer transfer window.
Ibrahimovic’s agent Mino Raiola has suggested that the Swede is keen to remain in the Premier League, opening the door to the former Barcelona man joining one of United’s rivals.
